Questions about how we consume food take on a new meaning when we get to know the faces, stories and hands of the people who grow the produce found in large supermarkets. Looking at packaged lettuce, which I would previously have put in my trolley, consoling myself with the fact that it was locally grown, I am now faced with a dilemma: contribute to a regional company that offers poor working conditions to foreign labourers, or not? Knowing that people and families depend on these jobs and have built their lives around an agro-food system that renders those who sustain it precarious — sometimes for decades — comes at a price. If buying is voting, how can we exercise our limited power as citizens in light of this dichotomy?
Between December 2025 and February 2026, Romeo Góngora and I met with three groups of Guatemalan temporary foreign workers (TFWs) from the Estrie region as part of the services provided to them by the organisation Actions interculturelles de développement et d’éducation (AIDE). The intention is to continue these meetings in order to develop a participatory action research approach in collaboration with AIDE and the TFWs.

Preguntas sobre cómo consumir para alimentarse adquieren otra dimensión cuando se conocen los rostros, las historias y las manos de quienes cultivan los productos agrícolas que se encuentran en los grandes supermercados. Frente a unas lechugas envasadas, que antes habría metido en el carro consolándome con que eran locales, hoy surge la duda: ¿contribuir a una empresa regional que ofrece condiciones laborales insuficientes a mano de obra extranjera o no hacerlo? Sabiendo que de ese empleo dependen personas y familias que han construido su vida en torno a un sistema agroalimentario que precariza a quienes lo sostienen, a veces durante décadas, con el precio que ello conlleva. Si comprar es votar, ¿cómo usar nuestro pequeño poder de expresión ciudadana ante esta dicotomía?
Entre diciembre de 2025 y febrero de 2026, en el marco de los servicios prestados a los trabajadores extranjeros temporales por la organización Actions interculturelles de développement et d’éducation (AIDE), Romeo Góngora y yo nos reunimos con tres grupos de trabajadores extranjeros temporales (TET) guatemaltecos de la región de l’Estrie. La intención es continuar con estos encuentros para desarrollar un enfoque de investigación-acción participativa en colaboración con AIDE y los TET.
