Artist’s reflections

“ The mere presence of the horse seems to act as a catalyst for inner processes
through which human beings deepen their relationship with their own selves.”  – Camila Vásquez

A few years ago, I traveled to Argentina for an art residency, where I intended to be with my newly growing interest in horses for their ancestral significance. The following year, I took a workshop with choreographer Dorian Nuskind alongside horses on the North Shore of Montreal. I have become intrigued by the animals’ remarkable ability to listen to our behaviors, whether visible or not. Their presence, with unparalleled attention, serves as a great resource for self exploration. These animals can sense doubt, anxiety, calm, and the inner coherence of a person—between one’s desires and what is actually projected. This deep understanding is reflected in their approach and movement toward humans. The lines of movement on the ground reveal the quality of a relationship. These two visits at the Fermitage and the Institut du ressenti brings me back to my work FatherDaughter with my father, where we create circular lines on foot and while running, symbolizing the fluidity and fluctuation of a filial, ancestral, and even queer relationship. In this new approach to relationality, how can I document the traces of these movements between myself and the horses? Between them, or between other animals? How can I develop a holistic visual language between emotionality, concept and drawing, based on various intuitive explorations with nature, landscape, and its animals as resources?
