Dans le cadre d\u2019une s\u00e9rie d\u2019expositions d\u00e9di\u00e9e aux publics jeunesse, Juan Ortiz-Apuy invite les enfants \u00e0 poser un regard critique sur l\u2019actuelle soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de consommation et sur ses cons\u00e9quences environnementales avec le projet Tropicana. <\/em>L\u2019artiste montr\u00e9alais d\u2019origine costaricaine Juan Ortiz-Apuy a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 pour l\u2019occasion une installation multidisciplinaire haute en couleur o\u00f9 se c\u00f4toient des animaux exotiques, des objets insolites, des cr\u00e9atures mutantes et des rythmes endiabl\u00e9s de cumbia. C\u2019est au moyen d\u2019un riche environnement visuel et sonore compos\u00e9 de vid\u00e9os, d\u2019images et d\u2019objets de consommation \u00e0 l\u2019apparence parfois surprenante qu\u2019il explore le langage publicitaire de m\u00eame que les nouvelles strat\u00e9gies commerciales observ\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019heure des r\u00e9seaux sociaux.<\/p>\n

Favorisant l\u2019\u00e9veil des sens et l\u2019esprit critique, les activit\u00e9s propos\u00e9es permettront aux \u00e9l\u00e8ves de d\u00e9coder les messages publicitaires et de se familiariser avec la consommation responsable. En plus d\u2019une visite comment\u00e9e, les jeunes ont l\u2019occasion de prendre part \u00e0 des jeux d\u2019observation et \u00e0 un atelier con\u00e7u pour approfondir la r\u00e9flexion sur les enjeux abord\u00e9s par Juan Ortiz-Apuy.<\/p>\n

Il d\u00e9tient un baccalaur\u00e9at de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Concordia, un dipl\u00f4me d\u2019\u00e9tude sup\u00e9rieur de la Glasgow School of Art et une ma\u00eetrise de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 NSCAD. L\u2019artiste compare souvent ses installations \u00e0 des encyclop\u00e9dies, o\u00f9 des th\u00e8mes et des id\u00e9es qui \u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue ne semblent pas avoir de lien entre eux, s\u2019entrelacent et se modifient. Les id\u00e9es se transforment ainsi en une toile de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences discordantes, o\u00f9 celles-ci se rejoignent \u00e0 certains endroits et se d\u00e9cousent ailleurs. \u00c0 travers la juxtaposition, l\u2019assemblage et le collage des moments, id\u00e9es et sources sp\u00e9cifiques s\u2019imbriquent l\u2019une dans l\u2019autre, dans un r\u00e9seau d\u2019associations \u00e9vocatrices. S\u2019inspirant de la litt\u00e9rature, la th\u00e9orie, la culture populaire, le design et l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art, l\u2019artiste cr\u00e9er un syst\u00e8me, qui \u00e0 un certain moment suit sa propre logique, \u00e9nergie et vocabulaire.<\/p>\n

Ses oeuvres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 expos\u00e9es dans plusieurs centres d\u2019art \u00e0 travers le Canada, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019international. Son travail a notamment \u00e9t\u00e9 expos\u00e9 au MacLaren Arts Centre, Sporobole Centre en Art Actuel, la galerie Birch Libralato, ARTSPACE, Eastern Edge, A Space Gallery et \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de la Biennale de la ville de Qu\u00e9bec: Manif d\u2019art 7. En 2011 il s\u2019est m\u00e9rit\u00e9 le \u201cHalifax Regional Municipality Contemporary Visual Art Award\u201d.<\/p>\n

Son travail a fait l\u2019objet de revues et a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9 dans divers magasines, journaux et livres; les exemples les plus notables constituent The Brave New Avant Garde par Marc James L\u00e9ger et des articles dans Canadian Art, Le Devoir, The Gazette (Montr\u00e9al), The Telegram (St. John\u2019s), The Toronto Star, et \u00e0 MOMUS.ca.<\/p>\n

Ortiz-Apuy a pris part \u00e0 plusieurs r\u00e9sidences artistiques, telles qu\u2019au Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, et au Atlantic Centre for the Arts, \u00c9-U. Ses prochains projets incluent des expositions individuelles \u00e0 Toronto, Edmonton et Ottawa, ainsi que des r\u00e9sidences au Vermont Studio Center, et \u00e0 VSVSVS, Toronto.
