Inspir\u00e9 par un discours prononc\u00e9 par l’ancien Premier ministre canadien Pierre Elliott Trudeau, le long m\u00e9trage Reason Over Passion \/ La Raison avant la passion<\/em> (1967-1969) se pr\u00e9sente comme un r\u00e9cit de voyage, une satire politique et une exploration moderniste, et s\u2019av\u00e8re\u00a0 l\u2019un des films exp\u00e9rimentaux les plus reconnus de Joyce Wieland. Le film interroge l\u2019identit\u00e9 canadienne par le truchement de son territoire et de sa culture politique. Tandis que d\u00e9file une suite ininterrompue de paysages canadiens capt\u00e9s depuis la cabine d\u2019un v\u00e9hicule en transit, au bas de l\u2019image se succ\u00e8dent, tels des sous-titres, des permutations du titre g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9es par ordinateur, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 perdre le sens premier de la maxime. Ayant d\u00e9but\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re comme artiste peintre, Wieland a rapidement \u00e9tendu son r\u00e9pertoire \u00e0 une multitude de m\u00e9diums et de mat\u00e9riaux, notamment l\u2019art textile, la sculpture et le cin\u00e9ma d\u2019avant-garde. Elle est aujourd\u2019hui principalement reconnue pour ses films exp\u00e9rimentaux et sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 combler l\u2019\u00e9cart entre les factions artistiques de l\u2019\u00e9poque.
