\u00ab Two Refusals (Would We Recognize Ourselves Unbroken?) \u00bb est un film exp\u00e9rimental qui explore les r\u00e9cits entrem\u00eal\u00e9s autour de la lutte commune contre le colonialisme portugais entre l’Inde et l’Afrique, ainsi que les liens de solidarit\u00e9 qui se sont tiss\u00e9s entre les deux continents. Racont\u00e9 \u00e0 travers un m\u00e9lange d’entretiens et de r\u00e9cits fictifs, Two Refusals utilise un m\u00e9lange d’animation CGI, de film super 16 mm, de films d’archives trait\u00e9s \u00e0 la main et d\u00e9truits pour d\u00e9voiler les couches perdues de la construction du monde, de la parent\u00e9 et du r\u00e9seau mat\u00e9riel et immat\u00e9riel de relations qui se sont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es entre des personnages historiques \u00e0 Goa, au Mozambique, en Angola et en Guin\u00e9e-Bissau.<\/p>\n

Les r\u00eaves d’une femme sont hant\u00e9s par un titan mythologique de la mythologie portugaise appel\u00e9 Adamastor, un gigantesque nuage orageux form\u00e9 au cap de Bonne-Esp\u00e9rance qui cherchait \u00e0 d\u00e9truire le navire de Vasco de Gama et \u00e0 l’emp\u00eacher d’atteindre l’Inde. Repris de la plus ancienne \u0153uvre po\u00e9tique \u00e9pique du Portugal, Os Lus\u00edadas, Adamastor devient un personnage de refus, mais aussi d’\u00e9chec, qui pose finalement la question : \u00ab Qu’aurait-il pu se passer ? \u00bb<\/p>\n

Suneil Sanzgiri<\/strong> est un artiste, chercheur et cin\u00e9aste. \u00c0 travers des vid\u00e9os et des films exp\u00e9rimentaux, des animations, des essais et des installations, son travail aborde les questions d’identit\u00e9, d’h\u00e9ritage, de culture et de diaspora en relation avec la violence structurelle et les luttes anticoloniales dans les pays du Sud. Les films de Sanzgiri proposent des voyages sonores et visuels \u00e0 travers l’histoire familiale, la mythologie locale et l’h\u00e9ritage colonial de l’exploitation mini\u00e8re \u00e0 Goa, en Inde, d’o\u00f9 est originaire sa famille. Il utilise habilement et m\u00e9lange de mani\u00e8re vivante des rendus 3D, des vid\u00e9os prises par drone, de la photogramm\u00e9trie et du balayage lidar, des films et des animations 16 mm, des images d’archives et des pratiques documentaires sur ordinateur.<\/p>\n

Les \u0153uvres de Sanzgiri ont \u00e9t\u00e9 largement diffus\u00e9es dans des festivals et des salles du monde entier, notamment au Festival international du film de Rotterdam, au Festival du film de New York, au Festival international du film de Hong Kong, au Festival international du film de Camden, au Sheffield Doc\/Fest, au Doclisboa, \u00e0 la Viennale, au REDCAT, \u00e0 la Menil Collection, au Block Museum, au MASS MoCA, au moCa Cleveland, au Cin\u00e9ma Club, \u00e0 la Criterion Collection, et bien d’autres encore. Il a remport\u00e9 des prix au BlackStar Film Festival, \u00e0 l’Open City Documentary Festival, \u00e0 l’Images Festival, \u00e0 Videoex, et bien d’autres encore. Il a b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9 de bourses et de r\u00e9sidences \u00e0 SOMA, MacDowell, Pioneer Works, Sentient.Art.Film’s Line of Sight et Flaherty NYC. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 parmi les 25 nouveaux visages du cin\u00e9ma ind\u00e9pendant dans le num\u00e9ro d’automne 2021 du magazine Filmmaker et a figur\u00e9 dans le num\u00e9ro New Talent 2022 du magazine Art in America.<\/p>\n

Sanzgiri travaille actuellement sur son premier long m\u00e9trage, qui traite des liens de solidarit\u00e9 qui se sont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s entre l’Inde et l’Afrique \u00e0 partir de la r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 l’empire portugais.<\/p>\n

Sa premi\u00e8re exposition solo institutionnelle, \u00ab Here the Earth Grows Gold \u00bb, a ouvert ses portes au Brooklyn Museum en octobre 2023.<\/p>\n
