Dans le cadre de la r\u00e9sidence ArtLab 2023-24, la commissaire No\u00e9mie Fortin initie un rapprochement entre les univers artistiques de Maude Ar\u00e8s et Douglas Scholes. Avec la complicit\u00e9 de RURART, organisme \u0153uvrant dans les champs de l’art et de l’agriculture, leur rencontre prend racine dans la campagne des Cantons-de-l’Est. Les artistes sont invit\u00e9\u00b7es \u00e0 s\u2019impr\u00e9gner du rythme des saisons qui d\u00e9filent \u00e0 la ferme La G\u00e9n\u00e9reuse et \u00e0 y poser, chacun\u00b7e \u00e0 leur mani\u00e8re, des gestes d\u2019accumulation et d\u2019entretien.<\/p>\n

Scholes se concentre sur ce qui peut para\u00eetre anodin : les objets ordinaires, parfois d\u00e9laiss\u00e9s, les actions pragmatiques et le quotidien. D\u00e9ambulant dans des collections mus\u00e9ales et priv\u00e9es, des d\u00e9potoirs, le long de routes et de cours d\u2019eau, il trouve dans les rebuts et les objets abandonn\u00e9s une source d’\u00e9merveillement intarissable. De son c\u00f4t\u00e9, Ar\u00e8s porte une attention toute particuli\u00e8re aux diff\u00e9rents \u00e9tats de la mati\u00e8re. Adoptant une posture d\u2019observation sensible, elle s\u2019engage dans une relation po\u00e9tique au monde, aux fragments mat\u00e9riaux, aux brindilles et bouts de ficelle, aux objets trouv\u00e9s et aux outils-myst\u00e8res soigneusement confectionn\u00e9s qu\u2019elle conserve dans sa collection de bo\u00eetiers.<\/p>\n

Au croisement de leurs pratiques se trouve un int\u00e9r\u00eat pour les petites choses : celles trouv\u00e9es par hasard, glan\u00e9es dans la rue, rencontr\u00e9es dans des collections, cueillies ici et l\u00e0, celles dont on prend soin, que l\u2019on entretient, que l\u2019on rafistole et que l\u2019on rapi\u00e8ce, celles qui semblent banales, qui \u00e9chappent \u00e0 notre regard, mais qui nous habitent, celles qui sont pr\u00e9cieuses, remplies de souvenirs, et qui portent en elles de grandes charges affectives. Tout au long de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, leurs s\u00e9jours \u00e0 la ferme permettront de creuser le potentiel d\u2019activation de ce qui est l\u00e0, sur la terre qui a vu germer nombre de projets familiaux, agricoles, artistiques, nourriciers et \u00e9ducatifs. Une exposition r\u00e9coltant les traces de la r\u00e9sidence sera pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e \u00e0 la Galerie d’art Foreman \u00e0 l’automne 2024.<\/p>\n

Maude Ar\u00e8s<\/strong> est artiste interdisciplinaire. Se d\u00e9ployant en installation, en sculpture, en performance, en sc\u00e9nographie et en dessin, sa pratique artistique investigue les relations sensibles entre des mat\u00e9riaux trouv\u00e9s. Par l\u2019agencement de ces derniers, son travail met en sc\u00e8ne des environnements vuln\u00e9rables qui invitent \u00e0 porter attention aux subtilit\u00e9s des mondes tangibles. Ar\u00e8s d\u00e9cline ses r\u00e9flexions sur la performance des mat\u00e9riaux et des gestes qui les animent, dans des projets qui entrem\u00ealent arts visuels et arts vivants. Par l\u2019attention port\u00e9e \u00e0 la charge et aux activit\u00e9s des mat\u00e9riaux, elle observe les relations d\u2019interd\u00e9pendances visibles et invisibles liant \u00eatres humains et non-humains. <\/p>\n

Ses projets personnels et collaboratifs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al et en Colombie dans des centres d\u2019artistes et des th\u00e9\u00e2tres (Th\u00e9\u00e2tre La Chapelle, Galerie B-312, Tangente, Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Aux \u00c9curies, Galerie de l\u2019UQAM, Campos de Guti\u00e9rrez, Circa, Fondation PHI pour l\u2019art contemporain) et dans le cadre d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements (OFFTA, Nuit Blanche \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, ORANGE \u2013 L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nement d\u2019art actuel de Sainte-Hyacinthe, Chromatic, OUF! \u2013 Festival Off Casteliers).<\/p>\n

Douglas Scholes<\/strong> d\u00e9tient une formation acad\u00e9mique de l’Universit\u00e9 de Lethbridge (Baccalaur\u00e9at en beaux-arts, 1999) et de l’Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al (Maitrise en beaux-arts, 2001). Ses projets b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient \u00e9galement du soutien du Conseil des Arts du Canada et du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Qu\u00e9bec. Sa pratique comprend des photographies, des vid\u00e9os et des sculptures issues d’une exploration soutenue de l’esth\u00e9tique pragmatique (la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 actuelle) \u00e0 travers des r\u00e9sidences d’artistes et des expositions au Canada, aux \u00c9tats-Unis et en Europe. Son travail a notamment \u00e9t\u00e9 expos\u00e9 \u00e0 DARE DARE (Montr\u00e9al, 2004 et 2011), \u00e0 la Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (Halifax, 2019), \u00e0 Sporobole (Sherbrooke, 2018), \u00e0 LandMarks2017 avec Partners in Art et Parcs Canada (Montr\u00e9al, 2017). , Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge, 2015), Space Studios, r\u00e9sidence internationale (Londres, 2012), Le 3e Imp\u00e9rial (Granby, 2010-2011), La Maison Laurentine (France, 2011), DARE DARE et The Imagination Station (D\u00e9troit , 2011). Originaire de Lac-M\u00e9gantic, No\u00e9mie Fortin<\/strong> est une commissaire ind\u00e9pendante, autrice et travailleuse culturelle bas\u00e9e dans les Cantons-de-l\u2019Est. Elle vit avec sa famille sur le territoire traditionnel non c\u00e9d\u00e9 de la Nation W8banaki, le Ndakina, o\u00f9 elle accompagne des d\u00e9marches artistiques, agricoles et communautaires ax\u00e9es sur le soin du vivant. Sensible aux formes et pratiques enracin\u00e9es dans la pens\u00e9e \u00e9cof\u00e9ministe, elle concentre ses recherches sur l\u2019art \u00e9cologique qui sort des institutions pour aller \u00e0 la rencontre des territoires et des communaut\u00e9s, avec un int\u00e9r\u00eat particulier pour les milieux ruraux.
