Combinant des r\u00e9cits inspir\u00e9s de traditions ancestrales africaines et de la fuite d\u2019esclaves avec des mises en sc\u00e8ne de rituels contemporains, le film explore la menace que repr\u00e9sentent les industries pour cette communaut\u00e9 profond\u00e9ment ancr\u00e9e dans la terre, dans une r\u00e9gion qui risque d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9vast\u00e9e par la d\u00e9forestation et l\u2019exploitation mini\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet a \u00e9t\u00e9 initi\u00e9 par les artistes n\u00e9erlandais Lonnie van Brummelen et Siebren de Haan et \u00e9labor\u00e9 conjointement avec le metteur en sc\u00e8ne surinamais Tolin Erwin Alexander, lui-m\u00eame Aukan d\u2019origine marronne. Adoptant une approche exp\u00e9rimentale de sc\u00e9narisation collective, les trois ont \u00e9crit le sc\u00e9nario en \u00e9troite collaboration avec des membres de la communaut\u00e9 marronne, qui jouent les sc\u00e8nes pour la cam\u00e9ra, aux sons des criquets, des oiseaux, des arbres, des pierres et des eaux agit\u00e9es du fleuve Suriname. Leurs installations cin\u00e9matographiques, sculptures, publications et collages s\u2019int\u00e9ressent souvent aux paysages g\u00e9opolitiques et aux lieux d\u2019extraction et de commerce de ressources naturelles. Van Brummelen et De Haan ont r\u00e9alis\u00e9 deux projets de films participatifs en collaboration avec des communaut\u00e9s : Episode of the Sea (2014) avec des p\u00eacheurs n\u00e9erlandais de l\u2019ancienne \u00eele d\u2019Urk, et Les pierres ont des lois (2018) avec des Marrons du Suriname, cor\u00e9alis\u00e9 avec l\u2019homme de th\u00e9\u00e2tre surinamais Tolin Alexander.<\/p>\n<p>De 2010 \u00e0 2018, Van Brummelen et De Haan participent au groupe de recherche multidisciplinaire World of Matter et cofondent VRIZA, une maison de production de films d\u2019artistes bas\u00e9e \u00e0 Amsterdam. Leur livre Drifting Studio Practice, publi\u00e9 chez Hatje Cantz en 2021, propose une exploration pratique des strat\u00e9gies que sont l\u2019autorat collectif et les droits (non) humains pour composer avec l\u2019Anthropoc\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n<p>Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, leurs \u0153uvres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es \u00e0 la Biennale de Timisoara (2021); \u00e0 la Talbot Rice Gallery d\u2019\u00c9dimbourg (2019); au mus\u00e9e Calouste-Gulbenkian de Lisbonne (2017) ; au Yerba Buena Center for the Arts de San Francisco (2015); et au HartWare MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) de Dortmund (2014). Leurs \u0153uvres font partie des collections publiques du Kunsthaus de Z\u00fcrich, des Abattoirs \u00e0 Toulouse, du MUDAM au Luxembourg, du FRAC PACA \u00e0 Marseille, du MoMA \u00e0 New York et du Stedelijk Museum d\u2019Amsterdam. Leurs films ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s lors de nombreux festivals et \u00e9v\u00e9nements, notamment : Third Horizon Film Festival, MUBI, TIFF, IDFA, Frames of Representation (ICA), Quinzaine du documentaire (MoMA), s\u00e9minaire Robert Flaherty, RIDM, Festival international du film de Mar del Plata, Berlinale et CPH:DOX, Copenhague.<\/p>\n<p>Van Brummelen et de Haan vivent et travaillent \u00e0 Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tolin Alexander<\/strong> est un \u00e9crivain, homme de th\u00e9\u00e2tre et interpr\u00e8te surinamais d\u2019origine marronne. Il s\u2019int\u00e9resse particuli\u00e8rement au th\u00e9\u00e2tre interculturel et aux projets communautaires, et forme r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement des jeunes.<\/p>\n<p>En 1994, il fonde avec Louise Wondel (1971-2014) le groupe de danse folklorique Fiamba, dans le but d\u2019int\u00e9grer la culture marronne au sein de la communaut\u00e9 surinamaise. Depuis 2003, il cr\u00e9e des pi\u00e8ces th\u00e9\u00e2trales et des performances avec la compagnie Forum Tolin Toli Masanga. En 2007, il est l\u2019un des trois participants du projet Theater on the Move de l\u2019Institut royal des Tropiques, puis, en 2010, l\u2019un des initiateurs de la Caravane de la culture, qui s\u2019est rendue dans des villages de la r\u00e9gion frontali\u00e8re entre l\u2019\u00c9quateur et la Colombie, ravag\u00e9e par la violence.<\/p>\n<p>De 2015 \u00e0 2018, Tolin Alexander participe en tant que chercheur et cor\u00e9alisateur au projet de film Les pierres ont des lois. En 2019, il collabore avec l\u2019\u00e9quipage du Ship of Fools (La Nef des fous), naviguant sous pavillon n\u00e9erlandais, pour la pi\u00e8ce Lofzang op de Vrijheid, jou\u00e9e sur le pont du bateau amarr\u00e9 au quai de Paramaribo. En 2020 et 2021, il cr\u00e9e l\u2019installation audiovisuelle Swart Gat en collaboration avec Berith Danse et Bartel Meyburg. L\u2019\u0153uvre est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e au Plein Theater et au Bijlmer Parktheater.
